Control Your Narrative

Your life is a story, control your narrative.

Angela Jean

Processing events and difficult conversations are usually fueled by two things: perceptions (interpretation of facts) and the desire to be right.

When thoughts & conversations are motivated from a place of needing to be right or proving the other person is wrong, it rarely results in a good outcome.

So the question becomes, how can I move my thoughts or a conversation based on perception and the need to be right to a shared understanding to move forward and build the relationship? Here are a few steps.

1. Acknowledge that perceptions (yours and others’) are generally self-interested.

2. State the facts as you see them, focusing on observable facts – not your perception of the facts.

3. Acknowledge that your life experience influences your point of view.

4. Be curious and be open to allowing your assumptions to be tested and be curious and sensitive in testing others’ assumptions.

Conclusion

If we’re one of the lucky ones, we rise above the excuses and become the author of our own story, dreaming up possibilities for ourselves and making attempts to turn them into reality.

We take control of our narrative, turning the life we have into the one we want..
